SwaleNYCThema: A floating food forest.
Beschreibung: Swale, a collaborative floating food project, is dedicated to rethinking and challenging New York City’s connection to our environment. Built on a 50-foot diameter floating platform and constructed from shipping containers from the Port of NY/NJ, Swale contains a gangway entrance, walkways, and an edible forest garden. Functioning as both a sculpture and a tool, Swale is at the intersection of public art and public service. Swale is a mobile, floating food forest that will dock at different piers around New York City’s harbor for months at a time. Working in collaboration with individuals and organizations city-wide, we will be creating a 50-foot wide floating platform to house an edible forest. We are currently working with students from Stuyvesant High School, Dwight-Englewood, and Fairfield University, as well as local gardeners. Swale is being designed and tested with insights from a nautical engineer, landscape architects, and the US Coast Guard. After a one year planning and building period, Swale will function as an floating island and will be open to the public.
